Stark: The election of Marvin Miller

July 26 will be Marvin Miller’s Hall of Fame induction day. It’s a day he thought would never arrive. It’s a day he’d decided, in the years before his death in 2012, that he no longer even wanted to arrive.
But amazingly, almost shockingly, Marvin Miller’s induction day will be happening. We know that now. We know because the Hall of Fame’s Modern Era Committee finally elected baseball’s legendary labor pioneer Sunday, after so many years and so many elections by so many committees that never did, never could and seemingly never would put this historic day on their calendar.
What we don’t know, however, is what Marvin Miller’s induction day will look like or feel like. Derek Jeter will be there. It will be his induction day, too, once the writers elect him next month. Ted Simmons will be there. It will be his induction day, as well, thanks to the same Modern Era Committee that elected Miller this weekend.
But there will be an empty seat where Marvin Miller should have sat. As of Sunday evening, his son, Peter, and his daughter, Susan, were still insisting they would honor their father’s wishes and not attend or participate in this ceremony — and have informed the Hall of Fame of that decision. That is their right. That is their family’s right. Those were their father’s instructions. It shouldn’t surprise any of us that his children will follow those instructions.
