Thorn: Were the 1927 Yankees the greatest team?

And so it ends, the 1927 season. Through the daily reports of of Myles Thomas, Ford Frick, and a handful of others, we know these Yankees better than anyone ever has, even those who were present for their joyous romp through all futile opposition.

And there never was a team like this Murderers’ Row bunch, I say.

Not the Yankee Clippers of 1939; not the Mantle-Maris Bombers of 1961; not the 125-game winning Yankee squad of 1998.

A statistical case may be made for any of those four as the best team in baseball history — and below we’ll detail their reasoned claims upon your attention — but you can’t spell history without story, and in that department the 1927 club is enduringly beyond challenge.
