Willis: Found heirlooms bring fond memories of Ty Cobb for grandson

Knick-knacks and heirlooms were never very important to Charlie Cobb.

Following the death of his grandfather and baseball god Ty Cobb in 1961, Charlie’s mementos eventually narrowed to a 1909-issued pocket watch.

And now, a hairbrush.

When an Atlanta safe-deposit box belonging to Ty Cobb was recently discovered, some 56 years after the Hall of Famer’s death, and when that box was found to have some rather neat — if not exactly valuable — artifacts, the one item Charlie Cobb tucked away was the wood-handled brush.

“I sent most of the stuff up to Royston,” says Charlie, 72, referring to his grandfather’s North Georgia birthplace, home to the Ty Cobb Museum and his gravesite.
