Henry Aaron Hits Home Run Number 714

Description

A slide of a black-and-white Associated Press photograph of Henry Aaron hitting career home run number 714, tying Babe Ruth for the all-time career home run mark. Aaron hit the home run off of starting pitcher Jack Billingham in the first inning of their game on April 4th, 1974. He is watching the flight of the ball heading over the wall in left-center field. The photograph shows his entire body, Cincinnati Reds catcher Johnny Bench, and home plate umpire Ed Vargo. Bench and Vargo are standing behind Aaron, watching the ball in flight. With the baseball bat still in both hands, Aaron is leaning forward as he heads towards first base. His steps have taken him across home plate into the left-handed batter's box. Aaron is wearing an Atlanta Braves road uniform, a blue jersey top, and white pants. Bench is wearing the home Reds uniform, white with red numbering and lettering. He also wears catcher equipment, a mask, a chest protector, and shin guards. The caption on the left side of the photograph reads, "(CSS-9) Cincinnati, April 4 --- It Tied Now -- Henry Aaron starts to run as he watches the flight of his 714th home run Thursday in the first inning against the Cincinnati Reds in Cincinnati. That homer tied the all-time record set by Babe Ruth. (APWirephoto) (j51510stf)1974"
