Ban Johnson 1939 Centennial Stamp


Description

A color slide of a 1939 Centennial Stamp of Ban Johnson affixed to a stamp album. Stamp number 12 in the set shows him from the shoulders up on a red background. His body is slightly turned to the right, his head facing forward, hair parted in the middle. He wears a suit with a bow tie. The text on the top border reads, "1839 Centenial [sic] of Baseball 1939." On the red background, to the right, and above his head is the number 12. Underneath the portrait is written "Byron Bancroft (Ban) Johnson".The text on the bottom border reads "Commemorative Poster Stamps" with two baseballs on either side. Around the stamp's edges are various baseball symbols, such as bats and gloves. The stamp is mounted on page 11 of the stamp album issued with this and other stamps titled "Major 1st Events in a Century of Base Ball Portrayed by a Series of Commemorative Poster Stamps." Only a few lines of the album can be seen.
