Mickey Mantle Tagged at Home Plate by Fred Talbot

The photograph is from the first base side of the field near home plate. Talbot crouches down, his left knee almost touching the ground as he tags Mantle. He has his back toward the camera. He is wearing a Kansas City Athletics road uniform. Mantle is sliding on his right side and is seen cringing as he collides with Talbot. He is wearing a New York Yankees home uniform. The play occurred in the bottom of the 4th inning in the second game of a doubleheader between the New York Yankees and the Kansas City Athletics at Yankee Stadium on June 22, 1965. With runners on 1st and 2nd, one out, and Kansas City leading 2-0, Mantle tried to score from second base on a wild pitch and was thrown out by the catcher Billy Bryan to the pitcher, Fred Talbot. Mantle would leave the game following the play. The Yankees won the game, 4-2. Information written on the physical slide reads "safe at home"[sic].
