Hank Greenberg 1961 Golden Press Hall of Fame Baseball Stars Baseball Card
Description
A color slide of a 1961 Golden Press Hall of Fame Baseball Stars Non-Perforated Hank Greenberg Baseball Card. The card was originally included in a retail album titled “Hall of Fame Baseball Stars.” Card number 4 depicts Greenberg in the follow-through of his swing. His body twists to his left with the baseball bat pointed over his left shoulder. The stride of his swing results in his upper left leg being extended at a 45-degree angle and his lower leg bending at the knee, with his left shoe flat on the ground. His right leg is extended behind him, also bent at the knee, with his shoe almost vertical and his toes touching the ground. Greenberg is looking outward as if tracking the flight of the ball. He is wearing a Detroit Tigers road uniform and dark blue cap. Based on the uniform style, it appears the image is from 1938 or 1940-1941. The background features a grandstand full of fans. One writer speculated that the photograph was taken at Comiskey Park in Chicago, although this cannot be confirmed. Below the image, the bottom of the baseball card features a white strip with "HANK GREENBERG” in black capital letters and his position, “first base – outfield,” in black lower-case letters. The card pictured in the slide appears to still be in the album; it includes a portion of the original brown background of the album page, and the perforation that allowed a buyer to remove the “punch-out trading cards” from the album is still intact.
