Jackie Robinson and Ben Chapman

Description

A slide of a black-and-white photograph of Jackie Robinson (left) and Philadelphia Phillies manager Ben Chapman (right). In the three-quarter length shot, the men face each other holding a baseball bat. Chapman's hands are on the bat's handle, Robinson's right hand on the barrel part, with his left hand on his hip. Robinson is wearing a Brooklyn Dodgers road uniform, and Chapman is wearing a Phillies home uniform. The following is written on the physical slide: "1947 with Ben Chapman". The photograph was taken during a series between the Dodgers and the Phillies. Before the series, according to an interview with Chapman, conducted by Jack Saunders of the Pittsburgh Courier, the manager told his players to call Robinson everything and anything they wanted to. The result was severe taunting of Robinson by the Philadelphia bench jockeys, including hurling racial slurs. This prompted Baseball Commissioner Happy Candler to warn the Phillies organization severely.
