Ted Williams Advertisement for Havoline Motor Oil
Description
A slide of a color photograph showing an advertisement for Havoline Motor Oil. The ad appears to be on the back cover of a magazine or program. An illustration of Ted Williams is in the upper half of the page in the follow-through of his swing. Williams' body twists to the right with his right leg extended in front of his left. Both hands are on the bat. His left arm comes across his chest, and the bat extends behind him on the same plane. Only the right side of his face is visible as he looks outward as if watching the flight of the batted ball. Williams is wearing a Boston Red Sox cap and a home uniform. Another illustration superimposed on the first image shows two hands holding a bat extending across the upper third of the page. A caption above the photos reads, "Custom-made for Ted Williams, star swatsman for the Boston Red Sox. Ted Williams has twice won the American League's Most Valuable Player Award. In 1949 he led the American League batsmen with 43 homers. His 'Louisville Slugger' bats are custom-made by Hillerich & Bradsby, Louisville, Kentucky. The rest of his equipment is custom-made by Wilson Sporting Goods Company." The bottom half of the page features a color photo of a can of Havoline motor oil, a small photo of a Texaco gas station sign, a small photo of a glove, and a caption espousing the benefits of Havoline. Sources report the ad ran at various times from 1949 to 1958. However, based on the references to the 1949 season, it appears more likely the ad dates specifically to 1950. Information written on the physical slide reads, "Havoline Motor Oil Adv. With Ted Williams."
