20 present for Bob Broeg Chapter’s monthly roundtable
Twenty members were present for the May 23, 2011, monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter at its usual location, The Original Crusoe’s, Osceola and Compton avenues in South St. Louis.
Lew Levey reported on his visit to the new SABR headquarters in Phoenix and said he thought the “Spartan” offices showed judicious use of SABR funds. His report overall was a favorable one of the new SABR office. Some members, however, were critical of the office move.
Loretta Donovan told members of the upcoming Shepard Barclay Tournament featuring local vintage baseball teams the St. Louis Perfectos and St. Louis Unions, to be held June 4-5 at Lafayette Park in South St. Louis.
Kris Lokemoen reported on the new book Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption, and Baseball’s Longest Game, by Dan Barry. She said the book covered many interesting aspects of the game and recommended it.
Chapter president Norm Richards reported on the new Stan Musial: An American Life, by George Vecsey. He said he thought the book was a blending of two biographies of Stan the Man, one by the late Bob Broeg and another more recent one by James Giglio, and that Vecsey’s book offered little that was new.
Bob Tiemann provided the monthly trivia quiz, this one based on the 2001 St. Louis Cardinals. Jim Rygelski was the winner, with 15 correct out of 23 questions, for which he won a never-used ticket to Game Seven of the 2001 World Series game in St. Louis (the Cardinals were eliminated by Arizona in the NLCS).
The next scheduled monthly roundtables are June 20, July 18, August 15, and September 19. The October meeting will be scheduled in September once the Cardinals’ postseason fate seems assured.
