Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter meeting recap – 9/24/2012
The monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg SABR Chapter drew 24 people on September 24, 2012, to the usual location, the Original Crusoe’s in South St. Louis.
Chapter president Norm Richards gave the first part of a two-part review of a new book, Gibson’s Last Stand, by Doug Feldmann, a former Bob Broeg Chapter chapter member who now teaches at Northern Kentucky University and serves as a scout for the Cincinnati Reds. (The book is published by University of Missouri Press, $29.95). The book covers the St. Louis Cardinals’ 1969-75 seasons. Richard focused on the 1969 season, in which Gussie Busch’s demands on the players caused the beginning of the breakup of the two-time defending N.L. champions. Richards will conclude his review at the October meeting.
Members also had an open discussion the Cardinals’ postseason chances and potential offseason moves. Mark Stangl won the monthly trivia quiz compiled by Robert Tiemann, this one on the 1987 season (25 years ago).
The next roundtable will be Tuesday, October 23, also at Crusoe’s. That date was picked because it is supposed to be the night before the World Series begins and therefore has no playoff games scheduled.
