Rio Grande Chapter meeting recap – 3/23/2013
At the March 23, 2013, meeting of the SABR Rio Grande Chapter, the guest speaker was Hank Paskiewicz, who grew up in Chicago and was a big fan of Luke Appling. A light-hitting shortstop, Paskiewicz played for the 1949 Carthage Cubs in the KOM League in 1949, an opponent of another shortstop, Mickey Mantle, of the Independence Yankees. Paskiewicz played in New Mexico for the Class C (and later Class B) Clovis Pioneers in the West Texas-New Mexico League (1951, 1954-56) and had several stories from his playing days. He later coached Sandia High School in Albuquerque to three state baseball championships. Now 82 years of age, Paskiewicz plays tennis regularly and is still sharp.
