Houston/Larry Dierker Chapter meeting recap – 3/16/2015
On Monday, March 16, 2015, SABR members from the Larry Dierker Chapter filled every seat in our special room at the Spaghetti Western Restaurant for our monthly meeting. We welcomed new members Vinnie Vronty, Joe Lahane, and Ken Sandlin and mentioned a few of our good friends who are currently on the DL — Harold Jones, Jimmy Wynn, Monte Irvin, and Bob Frahm — and wished them a speedy recovery.
Charle Pallilo, Clear Channel Sports Talk Host, spoke at length about his career starting as the littlest little leaguer on his little league team to his days at Syracuse University and then on to Houston where he has notched a position as the leading local sports authority on radio for the past 20 years. Not only did Charlie answer numerous questions from the field, he had some terrific trivia questions he threw at the group.
A special guest was Sugar Land Skeeters catcher Todd Jennings who told us about his playing career after being drafted by the Giants in the 2nd round of the 2003 baseball draft and his continuing desire to reach the majors. However Todd is also looking to life after baseball and he has developed a new catchers mask that provides better visibility for the player. It is currently in production and he plans to wear it this year. Interesting stuff.
Greg Moore then provided a tribute to former player and baseball executive Al Rosen who passed last week and mentioned a personal experience he had had with “Flip”.
Tal Smith won the Bill McCurdy “Irish” trivia contest with Mike McCroskey coming in a close 2nd,
Please note that your projection for Houston Astros wins in 2015 is due by April 6th with the tiebreaker being your guess on Skeeters wins.
The Babies play again on April 11th in Sealy. And please be sure to check out Greg Lucas’s wonderful Monte Irvin article that can be found on sabrhouston.org.
