Members and guests of the Boston Chapter gathered at Fenway Johnnie’s in Boston, a short walk from Fenway Park, at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, May 10, 2025. More than 15 people attended. (A must-win Celtics playoff game at the same time might have held down attendance.)

Chapter member Eric Poulin, editor of SABR’s latest book, Here Comes the Pizzer: The Found Poetry of Baseball Broadcasts, discussed the art of found poetry and gave dramatic readings of some of the book’s poems, accompanied by Marc Schwaber on guitar.

Chapter member Joanne Hulbert discussed presentations of interest at SABR’s 16th annual SABR Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Base Ball Conference, held on April 25-26 at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Joanne heartily recommends that SABR members attend the conference, both for the wealth and depth of information and for the excellent dining options.

Finally, chapter member Victor Son discussed his work as a Fenway Park tour guide. Victor has explained the legend and backstory of “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark” to everyone from players’ wives and families to groups of Boston schoolchildren. He told entertaining stories and discussed how tour guides navigate the sometimes tangled interaction of legend and fact – an inevitable challenge for a ballpark more than a century old.

Kurt Blumenau and Bill Nowlin, members of the Chapter’s “Leadership Bullpen,” served as emcees. Bill and Bruce McClure, who were recently elected to the SABR Board, were introduced and thanked for their service.

The meeting formally ended at about 6:15 p.m. The Leadership Bullpen continues to work on additional in-person or Zoom events for the coming months.
