Utica O-D: Spring training, 1967 and today

A memorable baseball season for me was 1967, when the only famous player I saw live was Sadaharu Oh, in the Japanese All-Star Game, when I was on R&R from Vietnam. I’ve already told the story of how I carried a Yankees pocket schedule on which I marked the wins and losses and Mickey Mantle’s career home runs, and how much later I got Mantle to sign it. But my first baseball experience that year came in March, when my mother sent me a Polaroid photo taken off the TV screen of an exhibition game. Somehow that reminder of home was more of a treat than the packages of cookies she also sent.
