Instead of being recruited by the likes of Goldman Sachs or Ernst & Young, Major League Baseball should establish its own fellowship where the future executives of the sport are recruited from prestigious universities across the country. “The Roland Hemond Fellowship,” named after the revered and universally admired longtime baseball executive, would allow each of the 30 ball clubs to select one exemplary scholar to participate in a year-long fellowship subsidized by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball. Besides securing the brightest minds in sports management, finance, economics, information technology and mathematics, Major League Baseball would be targeting exceptional individuals with an affinity for baseball as well as the capabilities to conduct quantitative research.

For instance, the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management at New York University is collaborating with Vince Gennaro, President of the Society for American Baseball Research (S.A.B.R.) on a one day case competition that will be held on campus in early November.
