Sandy Koufax’s uniform number at University of Cincinnati remains a mystery

The uniform number Sandy Koufax wore with the University of Cincinnati baseball team in 1954 is something of a mystery these days.
Koufax told The Enquirer in an interview last week that he couldn’t remember the number and three teammates interviewed this spring couldn’t recall either. Koufax played his one and only season with the UC baseball team 60 years ago this spring.
Koufax, who said he was notified of his induction into the University of Cincinnati Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011, played for UC on a basketball scholarship in 1953 before he joined the Bearcats baseball team before their season in ’54.
Because the uniform numbers were only on the back of the jersey, photos of Koufax at UC don’t show his number.
“We do have rosters, however jersey numbers are not listed on it (Sandy Koufax is also not listed on the roster),” said Alex Lange, UC Assistant Director of Sports Communications for baseball. “I have one team picture, but numbers are not visible. I have all of his stats and a story that was written on him, but nowhere can I find a jersey number.”
