McMurray: Yankees’ Joe McCarthy rode preparation, pride to the top

Joe McCarthy stressed preparation and avoided self-promotion. His focus on detail, understanding of how to manage personalities, and unwavering steadiness helped him to win seven World Series as a major league manager.

As skipper of the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox from 1926 to 1950 (except 1947, when he took a break), he produced a winning record every year and often outdistanced the second-place team by a huge margin.

McCarthy’s name arises whenever the greatest manager in major league history is debated.
