Nowlin: The Boston Red Stockings, 1871-75

Sometimes it seemed like life for me always started and ended with the Boston Red Sox. No doubt other fans feel the same way about their teams. As best I can estimate (I didn’t keep count), I’ve gone to somewhere over 1,000 Red Sox games, and I’ve seen some great ones. I’ve also written or edited something like 30 Red Sox-related books. One of the books was on the 1901 Boston Americans, the precursor of the Red Sox.
When Society for American Baseball Research member Bob LeMoine asked me to help edit a book on the 1871–75 Boston Red Stockings, I realized I didn’t know a thing about this team from my own hometown—though it was clearly a team with similarities in colored footwear. An opportunity to learn more? Sure. Let’s do it.
I was born in Boston, grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, and from age 14 all the way through college spent my summers on the Battle Green talking to tourists about the first battle of the American Revolution. I’ve always been interested in history, particularly of the Boston area. I was well rehearsed in Boston history during the 1770s, but knew nothing about baseball in the 1870s.
