Hagerty: The longest scoreless game in minor-league history
From SABR member Tim Hagerty at The Sporting News on December 21, 2016:
When you think of professional baseball records, North Dakota probably doesn’t come to mind. But three cities there were part of the longest scoreless game in history. The Fargo Red Stockings and Grand Forks Black Stockings of the Red River Valley League played a 25-inning, 0-0 tie in Devils Lake on July 18, 1891.
The marathon game was held at a neutral site. Grand Forks wasn’t drawing well, so team owner Tom Hill relocated the series 90 miles west to the North Dakota State Militia Training Grounds in Devils Lake, hoping for more fans there.
We’ll never know how long the deadlock would have lasted. The umpire ended the game after the bottom of the 25th because the players had to catch a train. The summer sun shines past 9:00 pm in North Dakota, so darkness was not an issue when the 25th inning concluded at 8:10 pm.
