Pollitt: Negro Leagues legend Judy Johnson may get Worcester memorial

From Richard Pollitt at Delmarva Now on August 23, 2017, with mention of SABR member Charles Weaver:

William Julius “Judy” Johnson is often regarded as one of the best baseball players from the Eastern Shore during the past 150 years.

A native of Snow Hill, Johnson participated in the first Negro League World Series in 1924, while also helping his team — the Hilldale Stars — earn three pennants. He was named the league MVP in 1929.

After his playing days, Johnson’s legacy still carried weight, as he was the sixth black player inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975. Throughout his playing time, Johnson racked up a .309 batting average, while scoring 466 runs and tallying 876 hits.

Though Johnson died in 1989, it hasn’t stopped Shore natives from discussing the mark he left on the Eastern Shore and the African-American baseball community.
