Thorn: In memoriam: Richard Malatzky
From SABR member John Thorn at Our Game on January 29, 2018:
Last week SABR lost one of its unsung heroes, the great researcher Richard Malatzky. As we learned from his brother, David, Richard Alan Malatzky passed away on January 22, 2018, age 61 years, 7 months, and 4 days. A chapel service was held yesterday at Shalom Jewish Funeral Home in the Bronx.
I knew Richard by his work, and we spoke excitedly about his progress with new finds when we met at SABR conventions. But others, especially those in the Biographical Research Committee, knew Richard far better, and far longer. Clearly he was indispensable. Not only did he dispel mysteries of very long standing that had stumped others for decades, he corrected some of the “compromise” errors made in earlier record books whereby, for example, two fairly inconsequential players with the same common last name (Smith, Jones, Miller, etc.) had their records mistakenly grouped under one individual. Peter Morris will have a great deal more to say in this space tomorrow about Richard’s specific contributions to getting the record straight.
Below are some remarks, including Peter’s brief comment, that his distant friends offered up for reading by SABR’s Evelyn Begley, who attended the service on the Society’s behalf.
