Haley: Baseball history is Trutor’s passion as he revives SABR Vermont chapter
From Tom Haley at the Rutland Herald on March 8, 2018, on SABR member Clayton Trutor:
Clayton Trutor works in Boston and writes a blog about University of Cincinnati sports for the website SB Nation, yet he is as Vermont as maple with a large chunk of Rutland County in his family history. His mother is Mount St. Joseph Academy graduate Kathy Champine, and his father Fair Haven graduate Barry Trutor.
Distance does not diminish his love of the Green Mountain State. He returned Monday to conduct a meeting at Smitty’s Pub on Burlington’s North Avenue in an effort to revitalize Vermont’s chapter for the Society for American Baseball Research.
“Eventually, I’d like to get back to Vermont,” Trutor said.
The Gardner-Waterman SABR Chapter in Burlington has not been as active in recent years and Trutor’s recent trip back home was an effort to help bring it back to life.
Eight people showed up at the meeting and it was agreed to meet again in the spring (on April 24 in Burlington).
Presenters are already lined up for that event including Castleton University geography professor Scott Roper, who will discuss his new book, “When Baseball Met Big Bill Haywood: The Battle for Manchester, New Hampshire, 1912-1916.”
