Apostoleris: The least experienced pitching rotations of the past 50 years

It’s no secret that the Padres boast a deep and supremely talented collection of prospects. Prior to spring training, BP’s Jeffrey Paternostro named San Diego the top farm system in baseball, writing:
This is the best system I’ve ranked in my time as BP’s lead prospect writer. I don’t think it’s all that close. … Impact talent at the top, a dozen or more potential future regulars in the bigs, high-upside plays in the low minors, depth for days.
With eight players on BP’s top-101 prospects list, the Padres are aiming to build a core of young talent developed through their farm system, and their February signing of Manny Machado for $300 million signaled to the rest of the league that they also view themselves as being a competitive major-league team sooner rather than later. Shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (no. 3 overall) and catcher Francisco Mejia (no. 20) made the Opening Day roster, and second baseman Luis Urias (no. 17) figures to make an impact on the 2019 team at some point after being sent back to Triple-A for now.
Though the Padres’ somewhat unexpected promotion of Tatis last week dominated the headlines about the team, their decision to also go with youth—and inexperience—in the starting rotation is also noteworthy.
