Adler: Yankees exec Jean Afterman wants to see an MLB team hire a female GM, just not her

As a child, Jean Afterman was fascinated by Queen Elizabeth I. Her mother, Marjorie, pointed her towards the Tudor monarch and instilled in her an appreciation of British history that to this day has persisted.
“She was a woman in a man’s world,” Afterman says of Elizabeth I, who was initially denied a place as the rightful heir to her father’s throne on the basis of her gender. “She succeeded in a man’s world, and I think that’s how I saw myself — that I was a woman in a man’s world.”
Afterman has fulfilled that destiny, becoming the highest-ranked woman in a major-league baseball operations department.
She is a Yankees assistant general manager and senior vice president, focusing on player contracts, rule compliance and the club’s business in Asia. She is now the Yankees’ fourth-most senior executive.
