Diamond/McGinty: MLB draft sends message to high-schoolers: go to college

From Jared Diamond and Tom McGinty at the Wall Street Journal on June 7, 2019:

Major League Baseball held its amateur draft this week, and the results sent a resounding message to kids around the country: If you want to play in the Show, stay in school.

Two decades ago, about 40% of the players selected in the first 40 rounds came directly from high school, the norm for much of the 1990s. Of the 1,217 players taken this season, only about 24% of draftees jumped straight from high school, the seventh consecutive year with a decrease in that category.
