Barron: To know Larry Dierker is to know Houston baseball

For many Houston baseball fans, the history of the Colt .45s and Astros is intertwined with the history of Larry Dierker, who Sunday will receive another honor from the team with which he has been associated for more than a half-century.
Already a member of the Astros’ Hall of Fame with his No. 49 retired from his 13 years as a pitcher and five years as manager, Dierker will be added to the team’s press box Wall of Honor in recognition of his 20 years as a broadcaster.
It completes a cycle of tributes for a career that is not likely to be duplicated in Astros lore.
“When he came here in 1964, there was no history,” said Bill Worrell, Dierker’s friend, fellow broadcaster and former college roommate. “He is ‘Mr. Astro.’ He spans all the decades.”
