Mains: Looking back on the 2019 season

From SABR member Rob Mains at Baseball Prospectus on December 11, 2019:

This time of year, there’s a flood of “Year in Review”-type articles. They go over the top stories that occurred in 2019 in politics, business, entertainment, sports, and the like. On one hand, they’re interesting. They remind what happened in the past year. We’ll recall events we may have forgotten (or forgotten they’d occurred this year). They put things in perspective from the vantage point of where we are at the end of the year compared to when they occurred.

On the other hand, they’re kind of lazy journalism. You don’t have to do original work or seek out a new story to write a Year in Review article. You just have to do a search on your prior work. You can bang out a few articles without having to do anything new.

Welcome to my version of lazy journalism. I’m going to review some of the stuff I wrote in 2019. I’m going to look at some of the topics and trends about which I wrote during the season and see how well they held up over the rest of the season. I think that’s a worthwhile exercise. (And, with a nod toward lazy journalism, I will be able to squeeze more than one article out of this.)
