Miller: A conversation with Baseball Hall of Fame executive John Schuerholz

Baseball Hall of Fame executive John Schuerholz carved out most of his long career many miles north of the Fit and Fuel Coffee Shop in Naples.
The shop, though, is where Mr. Schuerholz stopped on a sunny winter morning for a wide-ranging baseball conversation. The chat at a small table near the front door covered his Hall of Fame induction ceremony, rings, great teams and a difficult career decision.
Mr. Schuerholz, 79, is best known for building the Kansas City Royals and Atlanta Braves into World Series champions.
Although most of his career was spent far away from Southwest Florida, Mr. Schuerholz was with the Royals from 1969 to 1987 — all the years that they trained at Terry Park in Fort Myers. His ties to the region go back half a century.
He recently spoke to a Society for American Baseball Research event at the downtown Naples location of the Collier County library system.
Mr. Schuerholz, a part-part-time Naples resident, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017 in Cooperstown, N.Y. a bucolic village far removed from the hurly-burly of Atlanta and Kansas City and even Naples.
