Tito Rondon
/in /by Jason BestRory Costello’s interests in both Latin America and players with unusual birthplaces have led him to study the lives of players from Nicaragua. In this effort, he has had the good fortune to work with Alberto “Tito” Rondon. Rondon was born in Los Angeles, but was brought up in the Nicaraguan countryside where he learned baseball among other things. He broadcast Major League games on Nicaraguan television before graduating to local games on the radio. He has broadcast baseball from the United States, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Italy. He has been heard in all the continental USA including the mountains of Alaska, in Cuba, and all Mexico and Central America. He was a Spanish broadcaster for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1990, Sports Editor and columnist for Nicaragua’s La Prensa for 11 years, and had a radio show on XM from 2005 to 2009. He has been a member of SABR since 1983, and recently won the Eduardo Valero Award of the Latino Committee for his research on “The League that Disappeared”, the Mexican National League of 1946.
