Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter meeting recap – 4/16/2012
The monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter on April 16, 2012, drew 19 people to the usual location, the Original Crusoe’s in South St. Louis.
Visitor Ed Moorman spoke to the group about his hopes that SABR members could participate as instructors in the Lifelong Learning Institute programs of Washington University in St. Louis. The institute offers non-college-credit courses to people over age 55 in numerous subjects.
Members discussed the early results of the 2012 season, particularly the Cardinals’ good start, while expressing concerns over the rocky start for ace pitcher Adam Wainwright.
Vice president BRIAN FLASPOHLER went over the results of a members’ poll at the March meeting, which showed strong support for the Cardinals qualifying for the playoffs in 2012 but not repeating as World Series winners. Eight people in the poll, taken at the March meeting, predicted the Detroit Tigers would win the World Series, most for any club and far ahead of the three votes for the Philadelphia Phillies. Only one predicted that the Cardinals would repeat. The Tigers drew nine votes for A.L. champ, most of any team, while the Cardinals drew three votes for N.L. champ, tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks but behind the six votes for Philadelphia.
JIM LEEFERS, with a score of 14 of a possible 20, won the monthly trivia contest prepared by BOB TIEMANN about Cardinals’ home openers.
The next Bob Broeg roundtable will be Tuesday, May 15, at Crusoe’s.
