Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter meeting recap – 5/21/2013

Twenty-two people attended the May 21, 2013, monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg St. Louis SABR Chapter. It was held in the usual location, the Original Crusoe’s in South St. Louis.

Rich Applegate reviewed a new e-book, “The Relentless Pursuit: Pete Rose’s Self-Serving Quest for the All-Time Hits Record, 1983-1986,” available on smashwords.com. Rich thought the author did a thorough job of researching and presenting the subject.

Members discussed a number of subjects: the future of Cardinals pitching ace Chris Carpenter; the state of the Cardinals starting pitching; third baseman David Freese’s future; the future of pitching statistics.

Three members of the St. Louis Browns Historical Society attended the meeting and discussed plans for the society’s annual luncheon to be held this year on September 26. The site has not been determined. The date will be the eve of the 60th anniversary of the St. Louis Browns’ final home game. Browns Historical Society president Bill Rogers said plans are for the luncheon speaker to be Don Larsen, a one-time Browns pitcher who tossed the only perfect game so far in World Series history.

Jim Rygelski won the monthly trivia quiz compiled by Bob Tiemann. This month’s quiz featured 40 true-false questions about baseball in the 1950s, titled, “The Truth about the 1950s and Some Falsehoods.”

The next Bob Broeg Chapter roundtable is Monday, June 24, at Crusoe’s.
