Bob Broeg St. Louis Chapter meeting recap – 9/16/2013

Twenty-four people attended the September 16, 2013, monthly roundtable of the Bob Broeg St. Louis SABR Chapter at its usual location, the Original Crusoe’s in South St. Louis.

Attendees primarily discussed the Cardinals’ playoff hopes. The membership did so while watching the broadcast of the Cardinals-Rockies game from Denver.

John Schoon reported on the book God Bless America by Sheryl Kaskowitz, published this year by Oxford University Press. He focused on the author’s research into the playing of the song at baseball games.

Bud Kane reminisced about talking to Stan Musial years ago after a ceremony at the burial site of Cardinals Hall of Famer Joe Medwick in a St. Louis County cemetery. SABR members had led the effort to put a separate marker at the grave noting that Medwick was a Hall of Famer.

Mark Stangl won the monthly trivia quiz with a 16 score of 22 possible points. The quiz was titled “Pitchers Hitting” and was compiled by Bob Tiemann. The flip side of the quiz had stats Tiemann assembled on Bob Gibson’s career hitting and on batting records of selected St. Louis pitchers, including those of the St. Louis Browns of the American Association.

The next Bob Broeg Chapter meeting will be Tuesday, October 22, also at Crusoe’s. It is scheduled as an open date, one day before the start of the World Series.
