Cliff Kachline Chapter meeting recap – 7/24/2011

The Cliff Kachline Chapter met for its annual Induction Day meeting on July 24, 2011, at Tillapaugh’s Funeral Home in Cooperstown, New York. We had a superb turnout — 25 — including SABR Executive Director Marc Appleman.Members from as far as Toledo, Ohio, stopped by and stayed to hear our historians speak.

Mike Piazzi was our first presenter, explaining how research for his Snake Wiltse BioProject piece led him to explore the fascinating and tragic story of Harry Pulliam and his family.

Next up was Bruce Markusen, who took us on a light-hearted and funny PowerPoint tour of his favorite baseball cards from 1965-1985.

Dennis Corcoran spoke about his new book, Induction Day at Cooperstown, while showing many unseen photos of the Hall of Fame’s special day.

Gabe Schechter followed with an exploration of how and why Spink and Frick Award winners live with the fantasy that they are actual Hall of Famers, plaque and all.

Marty Dobrow ended the nearly three-hour meeting reading excerpts and showing photos from his book, Knocking On Heaven’s Door, a wonderful tale of six kids pursuing their dreams of making the major leagues.
