Lajoie-Start Chapter meeting recap – 11/30/2013

If you weren’t one of the 60-odd people at St. Philip’s Parish Center on Saturday, Noember 30 for the Lajoie-Start Southern New England Chapter meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, you missed a great meeting. All the speakers and presentations were top-notch. (I say 60-odd because we had 61 signups and there may have been a few who didn’t sign the attendance sheet.)

Gabriel Schechter, our main speaker, came from Cherry Valley, New York, and gave a most interesting talk on some players you’ve probably never heard of. Bob Tholkes from Minneapolis spoke om the 1863 season, and David Fleitz from Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, spoke about one of our chapter namesakes, Napoleon Lajoie.

Steve Krevisky spoke on leaders in hits, runs and doubles. Dixie Tourangeau described his visit to Miami to see the Marlins the last week of the season (no-hitter involved.) Dixie also conducted the trivia quiz, which was based on events of this past season. (Note: Several of you asked me if you could get copies of the quiz. If you send me a reminder, I’ll forward your email addresses to Dixie and he will send you the quiz.)

We raffled off a lot of books in an effort to reduce our inventory. Many of you picked up copies of the media guides that we got from the Red Sox, and the leftovers were taken by Steve Krevisky for the Connecticut chapter’s next meeting.

Thanks also to Mike Darowski, who conducted the mock Hall of Fame election. We “elected” Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Frank Thomas. Let’s see if the baseball writers agree with us. (Click here to download a PDF file with the chapter election results.)

Many thanks to the people who came early to set up the chairs and tables, then stayed at the end to put everything away. Also thanks and my apologies to anyone I forgot to mention here. Our next meeting will be held in June at McCoy Stadium. We’ll let you know the date as soon as we clear one with the Pawtucket Red Sox.
