Paying scant attention to ongoing hockey and basketball playoffs, 34 SABR members and guests on June 10, 2023, basked in a day of baseball, baseball, baseball. They were at the Lajoie-Start Southern New England SABR Chapter’s annual spring meeting, and enjoyed the day listening to research presentations, hearing guest speakers, and talking about the diamond sport.
The venue was the meeting hall of the First Baptist Church in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. The star of the day was Bob Montgomery, the former Boston Red Sox catcher and later a Red Sox broadcaster. For almost two hours Montgomery spoke and answered questions. He was, to put it mildly, straightforward.
Besides Montgomery, the group heard from SABR author Dan Schlossberg, who drove up from New Jersey to share tales of baseball players he has met, and to tell copies of his latest book.
Two members gave presentations. Mark Kanter spoke on “Baseball the Dominican Way,” his observations after a trip to the Dominican Republic.
Alan Cohen’s presentation focused on the careers of various Negro Leaguers after the Jackie Robinson Era took hold.
Our next meeting will be held on November 25, the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Details (venue, speaker, etc.) will be forwarded to chapter members in the fall.
