Lajoie-Start Southern New England Chapter meeting recap – 11/25/2023
Nearly 40 members and guests enjoyed five hours of baseball talk at the Lajoie-Start (Southern New England) Chapter’s Thanksgiving Saturday meeting on November 25, 2023, at the Smithfield (Rhode Island) Elks Lodge.
The highlight of the meeting was a repeat appearance by Lenny DiNardo, a member of the 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox. DiNardo held the stage for more than an hour and pleased the audience with his pithy and candid comments.
Another highlight was the chapter’s annual mock Hall of Fame election, conducted by Mike Darowski. For the second year in a row, the voters proved themselves a tough crowd; nobody was “elected” to the Hall. Adrian Beltre fell just one vote short of the 75% required for election. Other players who got 50% or more of the vote were Todd Helton (59%), Billy Wagner (59%), and Joe Mauer (51.5%).
Presentations were given by Herb Crehan, Mark Kanter, and Dixie Tourangeau.
The chapter’s next in-person meeting will be held in June at the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The date will be announced later.
