Lajoie-Start Southern New England Chapter meeting recap – 11/26/2022

The Lajoie-Start Southern New England Chapter held its annual Thanksgiving Weekend meeting on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at St. Philip’s Parish Center in Greenville, Rhode Island.

A panel discussion entertained the audience of 38 SABR members and guests for almost 90 minutes. The speakers, former Red Sox and Phillies pitcher Ken Ryan and Joe McDonald, a sportswriter for the Worcester (Massachusetts) Telegram & Gazette, got into the spirit of the occasion and dished on various topics ranging from Ryan’s accomplishments on the mound to McDonald’s experiences covering the Worcester Red Sox, the Boston Red Sox’ top farm team.

The meeting was the final one that the chapter will hold at St. Philip’s, as the parish now needs the space for its own purposes. Chapter leaders are searching for a new location for its annual fall meeting and expect to have an announcement for its members well in advance of the 2023 meeting.

Dixie Tourangeau gave a research presentation on nineteenth-century strikeout pitchers, and also took the pictures that accompany this report.

The chapter’s spring meeting will be held in June, on a Saturday to be announced, at the First Baptist Church in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.
