Ignoring the forbidding cold, 35 SABR members gathered for the Southern New England Chapter’s annual Thanksgiving weekend meeting held on November 30, 2024, at St. Philip Parish Center in Greenville, Rhode Island. The four-hour session featured activities and conversations on a host of baseball-related topics.

A highlight of the Southern New England chapter’s November meeting is a mock Hall of Fame election, conducted by chapter member Mike Darowski. Attendees “voted” in both the baseball writers’ segment and the Classic Baseball Era portion. Mike reported these results:

In the baseball writers’ vote, Ichiro Suzuki was “elected” in his first time on the ballot with 82.4% of the vote. Fellow first-timer C.C. Sabathia trailed with 50%. Of the 28 candidates, 25 received at least one vote.

In the Classic Baseball Era category, Luis Tiant was the only candidate elected, with 85% of the vote. Second-place finisher Dick Allen trailed with 67.6% of the vote.

The guest speaker for the meeting was Erik Sherman (pictured above), co-author with Dwight Evans of Dewey: Behind the Gold Glove.

Chapter members who gave presentations or spoke were Dixie Tourangeau, Herb Crehan, Joanne Hulbert, Jay Hurd, Steve Krevisky, and Skip Tuetken (pictured below).

Father Gerry Beirne’s Trivia quiz, a staple of the chapter’s meetings, was won by Marc Wise.
