Larry Dierker Chapter meeting recap – 6/21/2011

Former Major League player, coach and scout Grover “Deacon” Jones spoke to 25 SABR members of the Houston/Larry Dierker Chapter on June 21 at the Ragin Cajun Restaurant about his lengthy baseball life and career. “Deacon’s” six guidelines for living are Faith, Respect, Sweat, Discipline, Responsibility and Accountability. Jones currently is involved as Special Assistant to the President of the Sugar Land Skeeters, a new independent league team which will begin operations in April of 2012. A retired scout from the Baltimore Orioles, “Deacon” received the “Legends of Scouting Award” from MLB in January of this year.

Historian Mike Vance talked about his participation in the Houston Baseball History Project led by Bill McCurdy and then joined SABR. Bob Dorrill told the group about the “Owners Experience” a promotion conducted by the Corpus Christi Hooks, a Class A affiliate of the Houston Astros that exceeded all expectations. The trivia contest was won by Joe Thompson.
