Pee Wee Reese Chapter meeting recap – 4/5/2014

Hello Baseball Fans,

This is a brief report on the successful regional meeting of the Pee Wee Reese SABR Chapter that was held last weekend on Saturday, April 5, attended by 17 members and guests at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory.

Featured speaker Scott Wiegandt talked at length about his 10 years in the minors. He regaled everyone with his memories of many of the incidents and people whom he encountered along his journey. After answering questions, Scott left to go to Bellarmine University where, as AD, he oversaw a full day of athletic activities.

After reporting that the Chapter Treasury was still in fine shape, Treasurer Bud Thieman made a brief presentation about the relationship he had with Gus Bell as a teammate in the 1940s. Bud concluded his remarks with the reading of a touching letter from Gus’s widow.

Jack Sullivan, ably assisted by his daughter Kathryn handling the technology, then conducted the 25-question Trivia Contest for individuals, resumed after many years’ absence. Four tiebreakers had to be called into play before the three-way tie between faithful SABR members Brian Lepley, Dick Lutz and Robert Sawyer was broken. Bob Sawyer was the winner, 3-2-2, and went home with the $50 prize.

Everyone went home with a door prize, including guest Tonya Wilson, who won a free SABR membership for one year, worth $65. Our meeting was ably assisted by LSM&F intern Michael Dean.

We are all looking forward to our next event, the July 12 game between the Louisville Bats and Lehigh Valley IronPigs, at which we will have access to the Louisville Slugger Museum suite at Louisville Slugger Field. More details on signing up for that event will follow.
