Several SABR members will enlighten New York attendees at the March 5 meeting of the Casey Stengel Chapter meeting.

Headliners will include Kate Buford, whose biography of Jim Thorpe was nominated for SABR’s Larry Ritter Award; Sports Illustrated Senior Editor Kostya Kennedy who will share his insights about “56: Joe DiMaggio and the Last Magic Number in ports” and Bob Davids Award winner John Thorn, renowned historian, will reveal his new book, “Baseball in the Garden of Eden: The Secret History of the Early Game.”

That’s just three of the honored guests appearing on the sixth floor of the New York Public Library (40th St. and 5th Avenue).

Also included are Rob Edelman, film professor at the University at Albany, and Joe Dorinson, LIU history professor and former director of the Jackie Robinson Conference, so expect lots of Brooklyn Dodgers research.

Rounding out the bases, so to speak, are Dennis Corcoran (“Induction Day at Cooperstown: A History of the Baseball Hall of Fame Ceremony”), Doug Gladstone (“A Bitter Cup of Coffee”) and Mickey Tangel (Babe Ruth barnstorming).

In addition, there are raffles for books and memorabilia, trivia by Eric Weiss, and the annual player profile by Al Blumkin. Bring your donations.

Please register now with David Lippman (dhlippman@juno.com), who creates the name labels and needs as much lead time as possible, rather than waiting for the day-of-event registration. He does accept PayPal ($25 admission) and other forms of payment.

Spread the word, invite family and friends – all guests are welcome!
