Sweet Lou Johnson Lexington Chapter meeting recap – 7/24/2021
The Sweet Lou Johnson Lexington Chapter of SABR met virtually on Saturday, July 24, 2021, and had a great time! It had been a while since our last meeting and we were all so glad to hang out together again and talk baseball.
Chapter Leader Cindy Baker reported on the death of our Chapter’s namesake, Sweet Lou Johnson. Mr. Johnson passed away in September of 2020. See below for the link to RIP Baseball’s story on Lou Johnson.

Chapter “Manager” Ginger Baker led a discussion about the latest baseball news. Many fans expressed strong thoughts on Manfred’s changes to the game, including the idea of starting extra innings with a runner on second. Mostly, members were just very happy to be gathered together and talking baseball!
Cindy Baker reported that she was “virtually” attending the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference and that the $35 registration fee was the best money she had spent since the pandemic began! This was a three-day event.
Congratulations to Don Boes! Don won the Baseball Trivia Game; members all contributed questions for the quiz and it was very challenging. Don answered eight of the ten questions correctly.
Welcome to new baseball fan, Tammie Disco-Boggs! Tammie is a fan of the “in-stadium” experience of baseball and reports that she likes the Lexington Legends.
Thank you to Bob Tannenbaum for sharing a Game Day Story with the group. In 1969, Bob attended a game at Shea Stadium—Mets v Cubs. Tom Seaver (Mets) was pitching a perfect game until, in the ninth inning, Cubs rookie Jimmy Qualls singled to left field. This broke up the “almost perfect game” — what would have been the first perfect game for the Mets franchise. Seaver always called it his Imperfect Game.
