Grays Record Against Negro League Competition

Seamheads compiled the Grays’ record against Black competition in 1931 at 36-21-1. It did not include Homestead’s games against the Bacharach Giants, Cincinnati Tigers, and Dayton Marcos. For the sake of discussion, these teams have been added to this compilation given their Negro League makeup. The Grays went undefeated against those teams, boosting their season record against Black teams to 43-19-1.

THOMAS KERN was born and raised in Southwest Pennsylvania. Listening to the mellifluous voices of Bob Prince and Jim Woods in his youth, how could one not become a lifelong Pirates fan? He now lives in Silver Spring, Maryland and sees the Pirates, Nationals, and Orioles as often as possible. He is a SABR member dating back to the mid-1980s. With a love and appreciation for Negro League Baseball in addition to the Pirates, he has written SABR bios for the 1979 Pirates and Clemente books and has completed bios for Leon Day, John Henry Lloyd, Willie Foster, Judy Johnson, Turkey Stearnes, Hilton Smith, Louis Santop, Andy Cooper, Double Duty Radcliffe, and others.

SOURCES

The box scores in the Pittsburgh papers, the papers of their Negro League opposition, and the local papers where the Grays played on the road are significant sources for game results and stories.

Seamheads is invaluable, but in 1931 only included games against Negro League opposition. Most of the games the Grays played are not captured in Seamheads’ database.

Phil S. Dixon’s trailblazing work models how great research is done. Rather than capture the storylines Dixon presented, this research worked directly from the game accounts for nearly all the season’s schedule. In a small number of cases where Dixon’s research filled in the blanks, his work is directly cited.

The large hurling staff is necessary because of the heavy schedule the Grays undertake each season. Playing from 150 to 170 games a season is a contract that is remarkable. It is amazing that the Grays are able to win so many of their games as they play under all sorts of conditions and on all kinds of baseball fields.”
