2023 SABR Baseball Research Award winners announced

2023 SABR Baseball Research Award winners: Robert K. Fitts, Bill Nowlin, and James Forr for "Nichibei Yakyu: US Tours of Japan, 1907-1958"; Judith R. Hiltner and James R. Walker for "Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend"; and Justin Mckinney for "Baseball's Union Association: The Short, Strange Life of a 19th-Century Major League"

The 2023 SABR Baseball Research Awards, which honor outstanding research projects completed during the preceding calendar year that have significantly expanded our knowledge or understanding of baseball, have been awarded to:

  • Robert K. Fitts, Bill Nowlin, and James Forr, Nichibei Yakyu: US Tours of Japan, 1907-1958, Volume 1 (SABR)
  • Judith R. Hiltner and James R. Walker, Red Barber: The Life and Legacy of a Broadcasting Legend (University of Nebraska Press)
  • Justin Mckinney, Baseball’s Union Association: The Short, Strange Life of a 19th-Century Major League (McFarland & Co.)

Fitts is a three-time winner of the SABR Baseball Research Award, the founder of SABR’s Asian Baseball Committee, and the author of seven books on Japanese baseball. Nowlin is the author or editor of dozens of baseball books, primarily on the Boston Red Sox, and a longtime SABR Director. Forr is an award-winning author and he has presented at the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference and Frederick Ivor-Campbell 19th Century Conference.

Hiltner is professor emeritus of literature and languages at Saint Xavier University and the author of books and articles on American literature and culture. Walker is professor emeritus of communication at Saint Xavier University and a past executive director of the International Association of Communication and Sport.

Mckinney is a baseball researcher and archivist living in Calgary, Alberta. He has written articles on early baseball for SABR’s Baseball Research Journal and Baseball Biography Project, and Base Ball: Journal of the Early Game.

The SABR Baseball Research Award is designed to honor projects that do not fit the criteria for the Seymour Medal or the McFarland-SABR Baseball Research Award. The selection committee included Pete Cottrell (chair), Mike Bates, Bill Pearch, and Rich Arpi.
