2024 SABR Analytics: Watch highlights from Baseball’s Current and Future Application of AI Panel

2024 SABR Analytics: Baseball's Current and Future Applications of AI Panel

At the SABR Analytics Conference on Saturday, March 9, 2024, in Phoenix, Arizona, a panel discussion was held on Baseball’s Current and Future Applications of AI.

Panelists included Christopher Bitetto of Major League Baseball; Joe Rosales of Sports Info Solutions; Amod Sahasrabudhe of Gemini Sports Analytics; and moderator Brian Hall of AlphaPlay.

Here are some highlights from the panel:

On where AI can potentially make an impact in baseball

  • Bitetto: “It’s filling in gaps of data that’s missing that cameras can’t provide. And the human eye can’t bridge the gap. … When the time comes if it (AI) is implemented (in baseball), everybody is not questioning ‘Can we trust this technology or not?’ “
  • Sahasrabudhe: “What teams are starting to do now is build their own specific sports related LLM (AI) models.”
  • Hall: “Teams can tailor the generative AI to the specific preferences of a player, in the exact language, length, and number of bullet points that they want for a game. … AI could be a savior for baseball when it comes to engaging new fans. Having customized content, giving them interaction with the game.”
  • Rosales: “[AI can take in] the organization’s philosophy and elements relating to a certain player and auto-generate a bullet point or two bullet points for each day.”
