A life in baseball colors Dorothy Mills’ new novel

From Glenn Miller at the Fort Myers News-Press on December 23, 2011, on SABR member Dorothy Seymour Mills:

Dorothy Jane Mills is not a baseball fan, but she’s been around it for more than 60 years as a researcher, historian and writer.

In a bookcase a step away are three seminal baseball history books Mills wrote with her late husband, Harold Seymour.

Soon, the 83-year-old Mills will have another baseball book to add to her resume. “Drawing Card” is a novel set partly in Cleveland and is about a baseball player named Annie Cardello, who signs a minor-league contract in the 1930s.

The book incorporates real people. One of those, baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis, cancels Cardello’s contract.

The story is inspired partly on two actual women who signed pro contacts, one in 1931 and the other in 1952, according to Mills’ note on sources. Those contracts were voided.“In each case they went politely home,” Mills said.“In my book the character is still very angry.”
