While you’re in town, make sure to stop by the San Diego Central Library’s spectacular Sullivan Family Baseball Research Center, home of the SABR Collection, which opened in September 2013.

The Baseball Research Center initially opened in 2001 with an initial collection of books and microfilm donated by SABR’s Ted Williams Chapter. In the years since, it has grown to more than 3,000 publications, books, and journals, and 300 microfilm reels, all available to the public at San Diego’s downtown library.

Today, baseball fans and researchers can also view thousands of books on baseball history from its early origins in the 1700s to the present day, biographies, instruction manuals, encyclopedias, Spanish-language titles and San Diego Padres scrapbooks. The SABR collection also includes microfilm reels that are only available in one other location, the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown, including 19th-century baseball scrapbooks, American Association and Union Association records, Black Sox Scandal archives, player questionnaires and minor league contract cards.

Please also consider joining SABR member Tyrone Brooks and the Baseball Industry Network at the annual Baseball Industry Network Baseball Winter Meetings Meet-Up on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, from 10:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. at the nearby Manchester Grand Hyatt’s grand lobby bar.

This has become a great annual tradition for the Baseball Industry Network to bring together our members for a bit of networking and also helping out a good cause in the process. This year we are partnering with the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.) to raise awareness about helping members of the baseball family who are in dire need of assistance with no one to turn to. The baseball family includes former Major League players, coaches and managers, qualifying Minor League players, umpires, scouts, Negro League players, athletic trainers, Major League and Minor League front office personnel, women from the Professional Baseball League and the widows and children of all eligible members.

As in past years, we will have representatives from the various major league and minor league clubs present who are will be present and available to chat about potential positions. Dress attire is business casual. There is no cost to attend the morning meet-up, but like in past years, Tyrone is asking attendees to make a generous donation ($5-$20) which will be earmarked for the Baseball Assistance Team. If you are not able to attend in San Diego, your support of B.A.T. would still be greatly appreciated.

For convenience and because space is limited, please RSVP at https://binsd.eventbrite.com by Tuesday morning, December 9, 2014.

Follow the Baseball Industry Network on Twitter at @tybbnet to get instant updates leading up to the event. Tyrone can also be reached at tyrone.brooks@gmail.com.
