Berardino: Twins take a page from visiting Pirates, embrace ‘geek squad’

Twins closer Glen Perkins read the book and couldn’t help but notice encouraging echoes of his own surroundings. So did Jack Goin, no longer asked to be a one-man analytics department for the franchise.

As the Twins attempt to use analytics as a method of ending a four-year downturn, it is only natural for them to consider their own parallels to the path back to relevance forged by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

“It’s probably not at the level the Pirates were at and are at,” said Goin, Twins manager of major league administration and baseball research, “but it’s significantly better (than it was). This is just kind of a natural evolution.
