Bona: What happened in that historic 1916 Giants-Pirates tie game?

alk during the Indians’ historic winning streak included references to the New York Giants’ run in 1916. The debate continues between those who say Cleveland’s mark of 22 games is the true record while Major League Baseball says otherwise.

In that year, the Giants didn’t lose over 26 games – note the words “didn’t lose.” The 13th game – which came 101 years ago today, Sept. 18, 1916 – ended in a tie. The Indians, however, won 22 consecutive games from Aug. 24 through Sept. 16.

It even prompted Sen. Sherrod Brown, a lifelong Indians fan, to write Commissioner Rob Manfred, urging him to reject the Giants’ mark of 26 games.
